Green Drinks Gary Details:
For much of the 20th century East Chicago was known as Steel-town. It was a bustling city on the southern shores of Lake Michigan that boasted of being the most industrial city in the world. Now, after 40-years of globalization and the flight of capital, East Chicago’s industrial economy is entering new phase while not fully addressing the toxic secrets from its past. The presentation focuses on a recent scandal of the Lead contamination of the Calumet neighborhood, Environmental Justice, Climate Justice and East Chicago’s toxic legacy. The Toxic Tour is a story of East Chicago’s existing conditions.
Thomas Frank is a board member of the Southeast Environmental Task Force and former director of the East Chicago Waterway Management District (ECWMD). The ECWMD was charge with managing the cleanup of the Indiana Harbor Shipping Canal considered to be the most polluted waterway in the country. Thomas is a artist and activist who has been working for environmental justice and Climate Justice in the Great Lakes and Calumet regions for the past decade. He is committed to addressing heavily contaminated region and bringing them back into use for community-focused development and a Just Transition to a low-carbon economy.
