Millerites - The new owners of Woodlake Village Apartments are converting the complex into a "Low Income only" development. Under the new rules, the greedy poverty-pimp owners will kick out all current Woodlake Village residents who have an income that "exceeds the threshold to live at the apartments."
Translation: they are kicking out the folks who make "too much money" in order to make room for more destitute people so the owners can capitalize on government guaranteed, section 8 rent payments. This move will concentrate poverty in a remote area of Miller which is not walkable and has limited access to any public amenities or jobs. Studies have shown that this type of hyper concentration of poverty leads to hopelessness and despair which results in higher crime rates.
Sociologists has even coined a term for phenomenon, they call it a "Hyperghetto." Creating a Hyperghetto in Miller Beach is the exact opposite of everything we have been working for... Don't get me wrong, I am all for having affordable housing options in Miller. But studies have shown that concentrating poverty in Hyperghettos is horrible both for the low-income residents who live there and the community these developments are in...
Today, when communities want to add more affordable housing units they are turning to mixed income complexes with affordable housing and section 8 mixed together with market rate rental units. We should not allow a greedy developer who does not live in this community to displace rent-paying families in order to create a Hyperghetto of low income only "projects " so they can get rich on section 8 payments and not pay taxes.
The Miller Citizens Corporation (MCC) Social Justice Committee will be discussing this development at our next committee meeting: June 13th at 7:00pm at Marquette Methodist Church, (just previous to the regularly scheduled MCC meeting). If you are interested in how this will affect our community please plan to attend this meeting.
